Deformable Multi Template Matching with Application to Portal Images1

چکیده
The exact positioning of patients during radiotherapy is essential for high precision treatment. The registration of portal image sequences (megavoltage X-ray images) can help to control the patient position. The particular problem of portal imaging devices is that they provide imagery with extremely low contrast. Therefore, feature extraction followed by binary feature matching is a difficult task. To circumvent the step of feature extraction, the algorithm presented in this paper relies on an area-based matching of the image signal. This strategy contrasts with most state of the art registration algorithms for portal imagery. The paper includes the mathematical formalism of the least squares template matching method, as well as the framework for automated quality control, together leading to a fast, robust and very accurate image matching procedure. Tests have been carried out on 17 portal image series with more than 100 images in total. The algorithm only failed in less than 5 % of the images, which is very satisfying for portal images. In addition all matching failures were reliably detected by the self-diagnostics included in the computational framework. In all successful matches, no visible misalignment has been found. Tests with artificially rotated and shifted images allow us to demonstrate the good performance of the method with respect to a ground truth.

متن کاملOn Improved Deformable Template Matching For Polygonal Objects
In this paper, an improvement of deformable template matching algorithm for polygonal objects in grayscale images using two-dimensional deformable templates along orthogonal curves is presented. In the process of pre-computing extensions of the deformable template along orthogonal curves, the novel matching approach incorporates adapting knowledge-specific template discretization techniques app...
متن کاملMatching Deformable Features Based on Oriented Multi-scale Filter Banks
This paper presents a technique to enable deformable objects to be matched throughout video sequences based on the information provided by multi-scale Gaussian derivative filter banks. We show that this technique is robust enough for viewpoint changes, lighting changes, large motions of the matched object and small changes in rotation and scale. Unlike other well-known color-based techniques, t...
متن کاملDeformable Area-based Template Matching with Application to Low Contrast Imagery1
This paper reviews the mathematical formalism of the least squares template matching (LSM) and presents a framework for automatic quality control of the resulting match. LSM is an iterative and area-based fitting method which replaces the conventional multi-step procedure of feature extraction followed by discrete parameter search. The technique is especially suitable for attaining very high pr...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Welding System for Corner Joints Which Applies Joint Recognition by Deformable Template Matching
This paper presents an application of a flexible model-based template matching algorithm named "deformable template matching." The template which models the shape of objects consists of some nodal points and segments that connect the nodal points sequentially. The template holds information about the known deformation of the object's shape, and it makes the shape recognition flexible. The match...
